APPLY!

You can begin applying to colleges the fall semester of your senior year right up until time to start classes. However, in order to qualify for scholarship monies, you must be aware of the deadlines for each school, which usually fall anywhere between December 1 and March 15. Most colleges now require on-line applications. Be sure to check out each school's financial aid page to see what their deadlines are and if there is a separate application to be completed.

Once you have applied (We recommend applying to three different schools), you need to request that an official transcript be sent by your high school. The "Transcript Request Forms" are located outside Ms. Williamson's office. SHS will supply the envelopes and postage for four colleges. After that, transcripts will cost $3 CASH.

The ACT can have a big impact on scholarship money. For example, a 29 will get you a state grant of $2500 per year for four years to any Mississippi college. Most universities start giving money at the 25+ range.
We recommend that students take the ACT 3 times, once at the end of their Junior year and two more times in the fall of their senior year. (If you take the test in June and/or December, you can request that your actual test be mailed to you so that you can see the exact questions you missed: "Test Information Release").

RECOMMENDATIONS

Be sure that you have a "Student Resume Form" turned in to your counselor. These are used to write recommendation letters and when looking for candidates to recommend for certain honors. These forms are located in the Guidance Office lobby.
